“You can hold off on more candidates for now.”

Really?  Is it possible anyone can believe they have uttered those words, either recently or in the distant past?  As far as I’m concerned until a former offer is accepted, start date determined, and resignation completed without a counter-offer, there should always be new candidates in the pipeline.

For example, I tried a new online dating site last week and I’m currently looking at 4 or 5 prospects that seem to be leading to dates in the next week or so.  Great on paper (age, occupation, etc), good witty banter via email, phone conversations starting,  similar interested determined.  Now, that’s more than I’d like to juggle (I’m only human and unless I want to go on sabbatical there simply isn’t a lot of time I’m not working or sleeping) but I know from years of experience you need more bodies lined up to interview than you think you do.  If you meet a seemingly Mr. Right on a first date, who’s to say he’s not going to bring his Mom and cat on the 2nd date?  Don’t rely on a great first interview to think you’ve got the job filled.  You are far from it.  Sometimes it’s difficult to play the field when you’re busy, tired, and already have Friday and Saturday night booked with reservations at your favorite places.  But it’s important to prepare for the worse and have your back-ups ready.  You may not always need them, but it’s better to overprepare than underprepare.
