I Ain’t Talkin No Jive Turkey. Ain’t No One to Talk To!

So, the Thanksgiving weekend has passed us by and we know a couple things:

1) Missouri is #1 and West Virginia is #2 giving us a more than ample chance of having a National Championship game between two of the smaller schools to ever get there.
2) You can get extremely sick of Turkey within a 4-5 day period.
3) My nephews and niece are better looking before the age of 14 than I have ever been in my life.
4) It’s almost impossible to get in touch with my clients during the holiday season.

Now comes the time when people are on vacation, not hiring, lazy… whatever the excuse is. I implore you to not let yourself get lazy in the month of December. I’ve seen it happen too many times where my client decides to take the month off of talking to candidates only to jack up my inbox the first week of January trying to get 30 interviews set up in a day. You have to understand that these candidates are still going to be looking for jobs regardless of whether you feel like working or not. And, if they can’t get anything going with you, they’re going to get it going with some other agency.

Plus, if you take the month off, then I have no one to talk to. And then, I start talking to myself, people around me start to worry, they call the authorities and the next thing you know, ‘ole Lance is in a padded room, straight-jacket in tow, trying to flip the pages of a magazine with my feet and toes. That’s just not good for anyone.

Anticipate. You know these jobs are going to be sitting there unfilled when you get back from the holidays. Now is a great time for you to talk to candidates. They’re also taking vacations. They’re away from their respective offices and easily available for conversation. It’s a win-win for everyone involved. Plus, they are more likely to make a decision to move at the start of the new-year. Might as well start steering them down the “why don’t you come work for us” path now.

I don’t have much else to say about that. Just pick up the damn phone when I call!

Other things that I want to address:

1) Freddy Mercury sounds better and better every time I pick up a Queen album. Was there really anyone on the planet that could touch him?
2) My family is pretty cool to hang out with. It’s me being completely lazy that typically slows the process down. I realized this weekend that I actually kind of miss most of them.
3) Greenville, SC is still not worth writing home about. I mean, it’s a lot better than when I was younger, but it still smells like moth balls and old people.
4) If you get a mobile phone close enough to someone’s hearing aid, it will feedback. The only problem is it will destroy YOUR eardrum and not the person’s who’s wearing it. If you think about it, they can’t really hear it…that’s why they wear a hearing aid in the first place.
5) Comcast is pissing me off with this whole NFL network thing.
6) Brett Farve is pretty damn amazing.
7) So am I…

One final note: RIP Kevin DuBrow who was found dead at age 52. Kevin was the lead singer of Quiet Riot and a pretty cool guy. I had the chance to meet him while we were playing a festival in Valdosta, GA. He had really long hair extensions and someone accidentally left the auto-tuner on his voice the whole show, but he was a really nice guy.
