The Night Before the Offer

‘Twas the night before an offer, when all through the office place
Every creature was stirring, to win this final race;
The benefits were hung on the wall with care,
In hopes that a new employee soon would be there;

The creatives were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of six-figured salaries danced in their heads;
And EVP in her go go boots, and I in my driver’s cap,
Had just settled down for a long verbal recap,
When out on the net there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the chair to see what was the matter.
Away to the screen I flew like a flash,
Tore open the e-mail and threw up my snack.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen computer glow
Gave the luster of mid-day to subjects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature offer, and a ruined career,
With a little client side recruiter, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be a last minute trick.
More rapid than eagles her coursers they came,
And she whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, NO relo! Reduced title! 10k lower than submission!
On, early start date! on freelance before hire! on, more time you lucky Vixon!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away closing at all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the dreams of a fast offer - they flew,
With a night of negotiation, and late evening on the phone too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on my fitted head set,
The prancing and pawing of each little barter met.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the interactive pathway the offer came with a bound.
It was dressed all in black type, from the bottom to the top,
And it’s words were not tarnished with red marks from the HR cop;
A bundle of benefits she had flung on the talent’s back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes — how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the email he sent back had a nice golden glow;
The stump of a joint he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a brilliant mind and a little round Wacom,
That danced, when he thought like a breeze blown coconut palm.
He was giddy and agreeable, a right jolly Interactive Designer,
And I laughed when he called, in spite of the whiner;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the blank lines; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger on top of his pen,
And giving a nod, he signed the newer offer again;
He sprang to his phone, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all knew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Acceptance to all, and to all a good-night.”
